چکیده

We study P colonies introduced in [8] as a class of abstract computing devices composed of independent membrane agents, acting and evolving in a shared environment. In the present paper especially P colonies are considered, which are homogeneous with respect to the type of rules in each program of agents. The number of agents, as well as the number of programs in each agent are bounded, which are sufficient to guarantee computational completeness of homogeneous P colonies. We present results for P colonies with one and with two objects inside each agent.

Rapid anti-pathogen response in ant societies relies on high genetic diversity.

Social organisms are constantly exposed to infectious agents via physical contact with conspecifics. While previous work has shown that disease susceptibility at the individual and group level is influenced by genetic diversity within and between group members, it remains poorly understood how group-level resistance to pathogens relates directly to individual physiology, defence behaviour and s...

Hypervariability, a new phenomenon of genetic instability, related to DNA amplification in Streptomyces ambofaciens.

The wild-type strain Streptomyces ambofaciens DSM 40697 exhibits a high degree of genetic instability. Pigment-defective colonies were observed in the progeny of wild-type colonies at a frequency of about 0.01. While only 13% of these pigment-defective colonies gave rise to homogeneous progeny exhibiting the mutant parental phenotype, 87% of the mutant colonies gave rise to hetergeneous progeny...

Basophil/mast cell precursors in human peripheral blood.

Semisolid (methylcellulose) hemopoietic cultures revealed the presence of histamine-containing granulocyte colonies derived from precursors (CFU-C) present in human peripheral blood. Light microscopy and histochemical studies of cells in individual histamine-containing colonies demonstrated homogeneous populations of metachromatic basophil/mast cells (BMC) at various stages of maturation. By in...

Soft Substrates Promote Homogeneous Self-Renewal of Embryonic Stem Cells via Downregulating Cell-Matrix Tractions

Maintaining undifferentiated mouse embryonic stem cell (mESC) culture has been a major challenge as mESCs cultured in Leukemia Inhibitory Factor (LIF) conditions exhibit spontaneous differentiation, fluctuating expression of pluripotency genes, and genes of specialized cells. Here we show that, in sharp contrast to the mESCs seeded on the conventional rigid substrates, the mESCs cultured on the...

Generation of Highly Homogeneous Strains of Zebrafish Through Full Sib-Pair Mating

Genetically homogeneous populations, such as inbred strains, are powerful experimental tools that are ideally suited for studying immunology, cancer, and genetics of complex traits. The zebrafish, Danio rerio, has been underutilized in these research areas because homogeneous strains of experimental fish have not been available in tractable condition. Here, we attempted to inbreed two zebrafish...
